Do You Need a Digital Strategy?
We pride ourselves on being strategists first, content creators second. But while most marketers can recognize a good strategy when they see one, it can be difficult to figure out which pieces of your organization’s puzzle are strategy and which are tactics.
What makes a good digital strategy?
Your digital strategy should encompass all of the ways you are currently reaching your audience, as well as opportunities for growth. It should also include all the relevant foundational marketing basics:
Long-term organizational goals
Short-term campaign goals
Audience descriptions
Key messages
Tone and voice
From these basic puzzle pieces, you’ll have the foundation of a strategy. But what comes next is the fun part.
Once you know who you’re talking to, it’s time to develop the tactics you’ll use. But it’s important to let strategy lead tactics to avoid wasting precious time and effort. (After all, no one should be on Tumblr just because it was popular 10 years ago.)
Do I need a digital strategy?
Digital strategy touches every other area of your business. Whether you’re a campaign trying to reach volunteers or a nonprofit hosting an event in need of RSVPs, you’ll need to know who you’re talking to and where to find them.
So, do you need a digital strategy? Ask yourself these questions:
Does my organization need to fundraise?
Do we need to reach our community members on a regular basis?
Do we need to sell anything to maintain our programs or company?
If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you need a digital strategy.
Now ask yourself: Do I know where to start?
